In case you do not have a CD drive supporting booting from CD or you have decided to install by help of the network client without using smartdrv you will probably lose more than 15 minutes. Starting the command, a part of the memory is determined for working with the harddisk and greatly quickens reading and recording.
Conditions for the use
On the disk or on a diskette from which the operating system starts the extended memory must be made available by help of himem.sys driver. - It means the physical presence of a driver and accessing in the config.sys file. (example of a config sys file you will find in the
acrticle: Network clients - Optimalization of the config.sys and autoexec.bat files).
Together with the himem.sys file there must also be the smartdrv.exe file on the disk. (Under Windows 9x it is in the Windows directory).
After starting the computer it is necessary to run also the smartdrv (or to place it into the autoexec.bat file). - In the directory in which the smartdrv.exe file is located write
Under Windows operating systems it is not necessary to use the command because there are other drivers implemented in the system that carry out the same function.
When using the smartdrv with other programs under DOS, some unexpected errors can sometimes appear. It can be caused by the smartdrv program, but chiefly by insufficiency of the base memory which is largely used.
